Zach's "Senegal Memories" Quilt, 2014

Zach and his family are very happy with his quilt "Senegal Memories". If you saw my last post, I was figuring out how to use the fabrics Zach brought back from Senegal in a quilt for him. I voted one of the six fabrics "off the island", because it was too muted and grayed to go with the other vibrant, highly saturated fabrics.

I wanted to use a simple quilt pattern to give the busy fabrics a little structure, and let them speak for themselves rather than fighting with a pattern that vied for attention. I used the pattern called Rail Fence. There are five strips going one way then the next block has them going perpendicular to the first block. I put a group of four blocks together such that the same fabric in each block made a kind of "plus sign". Zach's good idea was to have the plus sign made of different fabrics in each set of four, which I did.

Here it is, and Happy Birthday to Zach! He leaves for Connecticut College in a few days and plans to take the quilt with him. May it bring him happy memories of his special time in Senegal, and remind him of the folks back home who love him.
